Jazz Point Ibiza 2023

Jazz Point Ibiza is once again bringing some of the biggest names on the international Jazz scene to perform here in Ibiza. The Festival will run from 12 to 15 October. David Moss and Adam Lenox of the Ibiza Music Agency work together with Joel Chriss Productions in New York to create these annual Festivals that are dedicated to making our island an important part of the international jazz scene. 

The celebration begins at 17:00H on Thursday 12/10 with an Opening Party Jam Session hosted by the WOM Radio Café  (📍Location )  in Santa Eulalia. The Pere Navarro Trio are the main performers, and they will be jamming with several of the international stars, plus local stars. The Opening Festivities continue at 21:00H at The Standard, Ibiza (📍Location ) on the Vara de Rey in Ibiza Town.

The following night (13/10) will be a change of pace with an elegant musical dinner hosted at the beautiful Safragell hotel  (📍 Location )  near San Lorenzo. The event starts at 20:00H and features two esteemed groups: The Juanma Trujillo Trio, with guest Javier Vercher, and the Albert Cirera Sextet.

Teatro Ibiza  (📍 Location )  is the venue for Saturday night (14/10) at 21:00H. This iconic home to live music presents famed headliners Alex Sipiagin & Ariel Bringuez, together with the Trevor Coleman Trio.

On Sunday 15/10 at noon at Can Ventosa  (📍 Location )  the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa, under the direction of Vicent Tur, will perform a free concert of jazz compositions in the style of the Big Band era.

At 20:00H on Sunday, the Festival comes back to Can Ventosa for the final show which features two star-studded groups. The lovely duo of Marta Sánchez (piano) and María Grand (sax) is followed by the hot sounds of the Perico Sambeat Quartet with guest Javier Vercher.

In addition to these amazing shows, some of the performers will be giving “Master Classes” for local musicians at Can Ventosa on Saturday 14/10 from 12:00H. These are open sessions where the musical masters share their wealth of knowledge about jazz and the art of performing at the highest level.

One of the brightest young talents in the Spanish jazz scene who has managed to forge an original, fresh, vanguard and unique sound that makes him unmistakable. 

Pere Navarro, trumpet player, pianist, composer and producer, is one of the brightest young talents in the Spanish jazz scene who has managed to forge in a very short period an original, fresh, vanguard and unique sound that makes him unmistakable. 

Originally from Ibiza, Pere Navarro began his love affair with the trumpet at the age of 8 and continued training at Taller de Musics in Barcelona. He has performed at numerous esteemed venues, theaters and festivals in Europe like Jamboree, Barcelona, Sala Clamores, Madrid, Pizza Express in London Sunset-Sunside or New Morning, in Paris, Lugo International Jazz Festival, Fringe Festival, London Catalan Festival, Krakow International Jazz Fest or 48Timer festival in Copenhagen, among others.  

His presence at the latest edition of Lugo's Jazz Festival was of particular note. His sold-out concert was chosen by SGAE and Radio3 (Spanish National Radio) to be broadcast live from legendary club Sala Clavicémbalo for the concert cycle "Viva La Música Viva".

In only 3 years, the Pere Navarro Quintet has released two albums on ‘Fresh Sound Records’. His debut album ‘Perenne’ that received a very positive response and his most recent record, “Pere Navarro Quintet Live in Madrid”, which was recorded live at Recoletos Jazz, one of the most important jazz clubs in Spain. In such a short period, he has been able to create his own sound as a musician and as a composer which makes his bands unique in the jazz scene.

On this year’s Jazz Point edition Pere Navarro will perform with Jesus Bachiller on electric bass and David Bao on drums.

JUANMA TRUJILLO generates powerful musical statements that engage not only the ears, but the mind and spirit as well.

Originally from Venezuela, guitarist Juanma Trujillo moved to New York in 2014, and has become an important member of the city’s jazz music scene. Juanma has played in numerous musical ensembles performing in venues all over the world, including Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Venezuela, Austria and Slovenia.

He has played in groups with outstanding artists such as Francisco Mela, Arturo O'Farrill, Ras Moshé, Mimi Jones, Guillermo Gregorio, Nick Grinder, Rebecca Sullivan, Ethan Helm, Leonor Falcón, Juan Pablo Carletti, Christof Knoche, and Andrew Schiller among others. 

Trujillo has developed a personal playing style that embraces many musical lineages from jazz, rock and Latin American music to improvised music. He continually strives to innovate amongst his contemporaries while also incorporating the mastery of his predecessors into his forward-leaning artistic explorations.

At Jazz Point 2023 Juanma will play with Javier Moreno on contrabass and Ramon Prats on drums with special guest Javier Vercher on tenor saxophone.

ALBERT CIRERA is one of the most active and versatile saxophonist on the Iberian Peninsula.

Albert Cirera is a Catalan musician who is a master of various reed instruments. He has released more than 30 recordings over the last five years. “Often his melodies begin encouraging you to dance, and then settle into the funky. Albert is a resourceful, restless improviser who is always searching and exploring uncharted sonic terrains. He often hides new musical fragments in his music for the listener to find and enjoy.“

Albert plays regularly with Ulrich Mitzlaff, Carlos Zingaro, Gabriel Ferrandini, Herânin Faustino or Abdul Moaimem. He has also shared the stage with Agustí Fernández, Joe Morris, Dani Domínguez, Jaume Llombart, Hugo Antunes, Massa Kamaguchi, Bart Maris, David Mengual, etc. His 2017 album, A.C & Tres Tambors, was awarded best album of the year in 2017 by Enderrock Magazine.

ALEX SIPIAGIN (RUSSIA) WITH ARIEL BRINGUEZ (CUBA) & THE TREVOR COLEMAN TRIO (NEW ZEALAND)

ALEX SIPIAGIN is an amazing musician who plays the trumpet in a completely original way, and is also a virtuoso flugelhorn soloist.

Alex Sipiagin has an international reputation as a unique musician who brings out the entire range of sound from his trumpet. He is also a consummate soloist on the flugelhorn. Since moving from Russia to the US in 1990, he has recorded numerous popular albums as a band leader and more than 20 solo albums. Alex is a founding member of the band Opus 5 along with Seamus Blake, David Kikoski, Boris Kozlov and Donald Edwards.

His first major job in the U.S. was with the Gil Evans Band, and he has also played with Mulgrew Miller. Alex has been seen in Jazz festivals throughout the world performing with the likes of Dave Holland, Michael Brecker, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, the Mingus groups, and many more. In addition, Alex is a multifaceted composer, arranger and producer, plus being a member of the faculty at New York University’s Steinhardt School. 

At this years's Jazz Point Alex Sipiagin will perform with Ariel Brinquez and the Trevor Coleman Trio which consists of Trevor Coleman on the keys, Manuel Posada "Popo" on electric bass and Lucía Martinez on drums.

ARIEL BRINGUEZ is a Grammy Award winning saxophonist, pianist, composer and arranger.

Ariel Bringuez graduated from the University of the Arts in Havana. He performed as a member of the famous Latin jazz band Maraca and Otra Vision with whom he toured for four years participating at important jazz festivals and clubs throughout Europe and the Americas. In 2004 and 2005 he obtained the First Prize in the International JoJazz Competition in the category of interpretation and composition. His first album ‘Raíces en Colores’ won the Opera Prima award at the 2009 Cubadisco.

Ariel performed with the Latin Big Band of the American saxophonist David Murray. He has also played with musicians such as Tata Güines, Changuito Quintana, Larry Willis, Horacio “El Negro” Hernández, Andy Narell, Simply Red, X Alfonso, Frank Lacy, Perico Sambeat, Javier Colina, Ivan “Melón” Gonzales, Alain Perez, Pepe Rivero, Grupo Synthesis, Ojos de Brujo, Interactivo, Román Filiu, among others. In 2018 he was part of the renowned award-winning Chucho Valdés line-up, on his 40th anniversary, IRAKERE 40.

TREVOR COLEMAN is a three time Emmy award nominated composer and producer.

Trevor Coleman, originally from New Zealand, was noticed as a special talent from a very young age. In his youth he was selected as the principal trumpet in the National Youth Orchestra. He went on to be awarded a scholarship to attend the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston, US. On returning to New Zealand in 1982 he began his career in film music with Wild South, later known as NHNZ. From 1985-2000 he was based in Germany performing jazz throughout Europe with the Trevor Coleman Group. He also played with other ensembles including 15 years with the musical comedy group Mark’n’Simon & the Professor. From 1992-2000 he was the resident composer, musical director and performer for the Choreographisches Theater (dance-theatre) in Freiburg and Bonn. Relocating back to Dunedin, New Zealand in 2000, Trevor devoted much of the next 13 years to composing film music worldwide. He was rewarded with three Emmy nominations for his documentary scores. During those years Trevor was still continuing to perform jazz and improvised music. In 2013 he began his studies to achieve a Doctorate in Musical Arts. Since 2017 he has been working from Seville, Spain where he is actively recording new material and performing live.

BIG BAND CIUTAT D'EIVISSA UNDER THE DIRECTION OF VINCENT TUR

The Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa, under the direction of trombonist and arranger Vicent Tur, will once again participate in Jazz Point Ibiza on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Can Ventosa. They will be performing a slightly different repertoire of jazz and swing than they are accustomed to. For this occasion, the BBCE will interpret fusion and funk-oriented repertoire, including songs by Joe Zawinul, Eddie Harris and more.

PERICO SAMBEAT is the Spanish saxophonist with the greatest international reputation.

Perico Sambeat is a Spanish jazz saxophonist whose work is widely recognized. In 1991 he moved to New York and entered the New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music, where he played with teachers like Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cobb and Joe Chambers. His prolific professional career has led him to play at festivals and clubs all over the world, and to record twenty works as a band leader. As a musician he prefers to use the alto sax, the soprano sax and the transverse flute. His extensive career has led him to various fields of jazz and improvisation, ranging from bop or post-bop, plus freer approaches, passing through funk or fusion with hip hop. Of special note is the way he has ‘married’ jazz with flamenco music. Perico has also participated in more than a hundred recordings with artists such as Bernardo Sassetti, Bob Sands, Chris Kase, George Colligan, Chano Domínguez, Lluís Vidal, Toni Belenguer, Javier Colina, and Albert Sanz, among others. He has also worked with internationally famous musicians such as Pat Metheny, Fred Hersch, Brad Mehldau, Mark Turner, Steve Lacy, Michael Brecker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maria Schneider, Daniel Humair and Kenny Wheeler.  

At Jazz Point 2023 Perico will perform with Mariano Díaz on piano, Toño Miguel on contrabass, Daniel Garcia on drums and Javier Vercher as special guest on tenor saxophone.


JAVIER VERCHER is a first-class tenor saxophone and multi-instrumentalist jazz musician.

Javier Vercher became interested in Jazz at the end of his classical clarinet studies, and guided his learning in that direction. He has learned his trade from some of the masters including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Perico Sambeat, Jorge Pardo and Chris Cheek. At just 18 years of age, Javier won a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston US. He was learning the art of improvising through contact with saxophone masters such as Frank Tiberi (director of the Woody Herman Big Band), George Garzone, Andy McGuee and Dino Govone.

His debut album in 2004, "Introducing the Javier Vercher Trio", announced that Javier would make a name for himself in the world of New York Jazz. He had already created an intense sound that oscillated between silence and screaming, which continues to be his style with the tenor sax. His third album, "Infinita" (2007), was a transitional work as co-leader of a quartet with the renowned Valencian alto saxophonist Perico Sambeat. From there his prestige began to transcend the Boston and New York scenes, as evidenced by being recognized with the "Tete Montoliu Award for Jazz Revelation Musician / SGAE”.


MARTA SÁNCHEZ, pianist and composer, is the only musician in Spain who has been selected three times by the AECID (government agency for international development cooperation) to represent Spain at jazz festivals in different countries.

Marta Sánchez, born and raised in Madrid, Spain, is actively working in the contemporary music scene in New York. Charting an important path through her innovative and original music has earned her significant worldwide recognition. The first band she created, Proyecto Zafari, was selected by the Spanish Agency for Youth to tour Spain playing at different jazz festivals. This band also won first prize in the international jazz Debajazz competition, first prize in the Jazzargia International Jazz Competition with the Javier Moreno Trio, and first prize in the San Martín de la Vega Jazz Competition with the Natalia Calderón Quartet. In 2011, she was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to continue her studies at New York University.

In 2015 Marta released an album “Partenika" that the famous critic Ben Ratliff from the New York Times called: “An ambitious recording made by a powerful new group”, and he included it as one of the 10 best recordings of the year. Downbeat gave the recording 4 stars and included it on their list of the best recordings of 2015. Dan Bilawsky wrote for ‘All About Jazz’ that the album "is like waking up to a whole new wonderful world," and Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader said: "Spanish pianist Marta Sánchez finds a new voice in New York.” ‘All Music’ and the Association of Jazz Journalists also selected Partenika as one of the best jazz records of 2015.


MARÍA KIM GRANDS 2018 album release was hailed by Billboard Magazine as one of "The 10 Best Jazz Albums of 2018".

María Kim Grand from Switzerland is a tenor saxophonist, recording artist, bandleader, vocalist, composer, visual artist, and educator. She has been based in New York since 2011, and has become an integral part of that city’s musical scene. María has toured Europe, the United States, and South America, as both a leader and ensemble member, playing at clubs, concert halls, and festivals. Her debut EP ‘Tetra Wind’ was released in 2017, and featured accompaniment by Román Filiú, Rashaan Carter, David Bryant, and Craig Weinrib. ‘NYC Jazz Records’ selected the EP as “one of 2017’s best debuts."

Her first full-length album ‘Magdalena’ came out in 2018. Along with Carter and Bryant, the album's ensemble included Jasmine Wilson, Amani Fela, Mary Halvorson, Fabian Amazon and Jeremy Dutton. The album was hailed by Billboard as one of "The 10 Best Jazz Albums of 2018." Her latest album “Reciprocity” was published in 2021 by Biophilia Records. María has performed with musicians such as Vijay Ayer, Steve Coleman, Greg Fox, Craig Taborn, Steve Lehman, Mary Halvorson, Doug Hammond, Jen Shy, Rajna Swaminathan, Nicole Mitchel, Tamara Renée, Aaron Parks, Fay Victor and others.

The duo of Marta Sánchez and María Grand will be playing compositions of María Grand.
